Creating a Skincare Routine for Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin is a common issue marked by heightened reactions to environmental factors and skincare products, leading to redness, itching and irritation. Finding suitable skincare products and routines can be particularly challenging for those with sensitive skin due to the very common presence of fragrances, dyes and harsh chemicals found in many products and brands. Additionally, sensitive skin often reacts unpredictably to changes in weather, diet and stress. How to create a skincare routine for sensitive skin?  It can be tough out there for those with sensitive skin! Creating a skincare routine tailored to sensitive skin involves careful selection and use of products that nurture and protect the skin without causing irritation.  🤍 Keep things simple When you have sensitive skin, keeping your skincare routine simple is crucial. Using fewer products minimises the risk of irritation and allows your skin to maintain its natural balance. A simplified routine helps to ensure that you’re not overloading your skin with too many active ingredients that could potentially cause reactions. Additionally, sticking to a consistent routine allows your skin to adjust and become more resilient over time. Tips:  Limit the number of products: Avoiding a plethora of different products and ingredients is crucial. This reduces the chance of irritation and makes it easier to identify any product that might be causing a reaction. Avoid frequent changes: Changing products frequently can disrupt your skin’s balance. Give your skin time to adapt to new products to see how it truly responds. esmi Product Recommendations: The Uncomplicated Cleanser: This gentle cleanser effectively removes impurities without stripping the skin, making it ideal for sensitive skin types. Sensitive Skin Solution Bundle: Replenish and calm sensitive skin with this curation of products designed to assist those with sensitive skin. It's targeted at strengthening and repairing damaged and impaired barriers to promote strong happy skin! 🤍 Avoid harsh ingredients Avoiding harsh ingredients is essential to maintaining a healthy and irritation-free complexion. Harsh ingredients can strip the skin of its natural oils, disrupt its barrier, and cause redness, dryness, and inflammation. By steering clear of such ingredients, you can help ensure your skin remains calm and balanced. Tips:  Steer clear of alcohol, sulfates & parabens: These ingredients can be drying and irritating, leading to increased sensitivity and discomfort. Avoid Strong exfoliants initially: Ingredients like AHAs and BHAs can be too harsh for sensitive skin. If you choose to use them, introduce them slowly and monitor your skin’s reaction. Patch test new products: Before applying new products to your face, do a patch test on a small area of your skin to ensure they don’t cause irritation or an allergic reaction. esmi Product Recommendations Probiotic Skin Mylck Cleanser: Formulated with protective Probiotic Lysates to strengthen the skin's natural defence this creamy probiotic cleanser gently lifts away impurities for clearer, softer skin and a calmer barrier. Sensitive Moisturiser: Nurture your skin with the best moisturiser for sensitive skin. Restorative with lightweight nourishment, this gentle fragrance-free moisturising cream will help to strengthen and repair compromised barriers. Rose + Bamboo Gentle-Foliant: This Gentle-Foliant contains a natural oil closest to the molecular structure of skin's own sebum, Jojoba Oil, which helps to balance and calm skin. It can aid in reducing redness and skin repair.  🤍 Choose fragrance-free products When it comes to sensitive skin, avoiding fragrance in skincare products is crucial. Fragrances, whether natural or synthetic, can be irritating and allergenic, leading to redness, itching and inflammation. Opting for fragrance-free products helps minimize the risk of adverse reactions and ensures a gentler approach to skincare.  🤍 Stay moisturised Keeping sensitive skin moisturized is essential to maintaining its health and resilience. Moisturizing helps to fortify the skin’s natural barrier, preventing dryness, irritation, and environmental damage. Well-hydrated skin is better equipped to handle external stressors and is less likely to react to irritants. Tips: Use a gentle moisturiser: Apply these products while the skin is still damp to lock in moisture effectively. Opt for hyaluronic acid for maximum hydrating: These ingredients attract and retain moisture, keeping the skin hydrated and plump. esmi Product Recommendations: Hyaluronic Hydrating Serum: To combat dehydration for all skin types, the skin cell's water content can be replenished with a hydrating serum containing hyaluronic acid. Using hyaluronic acid for skin in the form of a serum means thirsty face cells receive much needed moisture quickly. Sensitive Moisturiser: Nurture your skin with the best moisturizer for sensitive skin. Restorative with lightweight nourishment, this gentle fragrance-free moisturising cream will help to strengthen and repair compromised barriers. Proboitic Skin Mylck: Our Probiotic Skin Mylck helps heal and strengthen hypersensitive skin. The lightweight moisturising lotion is formulated with 100% Australian made probiotics. 🤍 Apply SPF daily Applying SPF daily is crucial for all skin types, but it's especially important for sensitive skin. Sensitive skin can be more susceptible to damage from UV rays, which can exacerbate irritation, redness, and other skin conditions. Daily use of sunscreen helps protect your skin from harmful UV radiation, preventing immediate and long-term damage Protects from UV damage: Prevents sunburn and reduces the risk of skin cancer by blocking harmful UV rays. Prevents premature ageing: Regular use of sunscreen helps prevent photoaging, including wrinkles and sunspots, which can be more pronounced in sensitive skin. Maintains overall skin health: Consistent protection from UV exposure helps keep sensitive skin calm and reduces the likelihood of flare-ups and irritation. esmi Product Recommendations esmi Skin Shield Sunscreen SPF 30: The perfect everyday mineral sunscreen. Its non-greasy formula suits all skin types, and is very gentle on sensitive skin. This sunscreen is ideal for use on the face, absorbing beautifully into your skin and leaving you with long-lasting UV protection and hydration. Molecular Weight of Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid is widely used in skincare products due to its incredible ability to hydrate the skin and reveal a plumper, smoother appearance.  A decreased amount of Hyaluronic Acid can lead to not just dehydration, but a lower elasticity of the skin - leading to the formation of fine lines. By maintaining moisture in the skin, using Hyaluronic Acid can help promote a youthful look.  So, what does Hyaluronic Acid look like?  Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is a naturally occurring polysaccharide found in the human body, particularly in connective tissues, skin and eyes. It is known for its unique ability to retain water, which makes it an essential molecule for maintaining moisture and lubrication in tissues. Hyaluronic Acid is considered a humectant, meaning it attracts and binds to water molecules from the deeper layers of your skin and the air. The amount of HA in the skin is equivalent to 50% or more of the total amount of Hyaluronic Acid in the body which shows just how important this molecule is for not just our skin but bodily functions overall! What is molecular weight in terms of Hyaluronic Acid? Molecular weight correlates to the size of the HA molecule being used in a skincare formula and is predetermined by the source of that particular molecule (whether it's animal based or even man made!). The greater the weight, the larger the molecule.  The skin has quite a strict entry policy and will only allow an ingredient's molecules of a certain size to pass through the skin barrier and then travel into the cells to make those changes we like to see in the skin. For example, collagen is a molecule that is far too big to pass through the skin barrier and if not adjusted in the formula properly will just sit on the surface of the skin rather than be absorbed.  The molecular weight of esmi's Hyaluronic Hydrating Serum esmi's Hyaluronic Hydrating Serum contains a Cube3 broad-spectrum hyaluronic acid. This features a cubed triple action technology, and is based on a full spectrum of molecule lengths - a combination of small and large molecular weight. This means it acts harmoniously on a range of molecules just like when hyaluronic acid is naturally found in your body. A broad spectrum Hyaluronic Acid is ideal to keep the skin's moisture content high for an increased period of time.  After 24 hours, our Cube3 Hyaluronic Acid demonstrates greater performance versus both low (55% more efficient) or high (125% more efficient) molecular weight Hyaluronic Acid. Our Cube3 can also show an enhancement of the penetration of other active ingredients too, both water and oil soluble!  Being a broad spectrum ingredient, this has also been proven to slow down water loss from the skin barrier to 25% in 2 hours.

Let's Talk Probiotics!

Pre-, pro- and post-, what are they and how can they be used in skincare? Let's dive into their functions and how they can help repair an imbalanced skin barrier.  What is the skin microbiome?  The skin microbiome refers to the diverse collection of microorganisms that live on the surface of the skin, including bacteria, fungi, viruses and mites. These microorganisms play an essential role in the skin's health, regulating the skin's pH, protecting the skin from harmful pathogens and regulating the skin's immune response.  What are the signs of a microbiome imbalance?   Some of the signs of an imbalance include:  Acne Dryness & flaking Redness & irritation  Increased sensitivity  Excessive oil production  Persistent skin conditions (Eczema, Perioral Dermatitis, Psoriasis)  Slow healing What are pre, post & probiotics?  Prebiotics Essentially food for the skin, they can help promote the growth of beneficial bacteria while discouraging the growth of harmful ones. Probiotics These are microorganisms and when applied topically they can help to strengthen the skin's natural defences, support barrier function and reduce inflammation. Postbiotics What you get when Probiotics 'eat' Prebiotics - the fermented byproduct provides similar benefits to Probiotics without the need for live microorganisms. This is the most common of the '-biotics' found in skincare. Where can I find them in the esmi range?  Probiotic Skin Mylcks Our Probiotic Skin Mylcks contain Lactobacillus rhamnosus Lysate, which is a bacteria that has been optimised and extracted from the Probiotic function and encapsulated as a Probiotic Lysate. Whilst a Lysate is not live, it was once a viable Probiotic cell, but is now a collection of cell components fragmented into a concentrated dose of Probiotic function. It is also a safer, more stable way to include Probiotic function in formulations to ensure efficacy.  Lysates probiotic bacteria possess a wide range of properties: they can be anti- inflammatory, anti-bacterial, antioxidant, stimulate wound healing and stabilising. We are the first skincare company using a 100% Australian-made Lactobacillus rhamnosus Lysate produced in Australia’s first and only cGMP/TGA certified facility for probiotic API manufacturing! This particular Probiotic has been carefully selected and researched for its incredible benefits for the skin. Thirsty Skin Plumping Sheet Mask Our Thirsty Skin Plumping Mask contains Pineapple and Papaya ferment (Lactobacillus/Ananas Sativa Ferment Filtrate, Lactobacillus/Papaya Carica Ferment Filtrate) which is rich in postbiotics from the fermentation process. Both fruits are enriched with enzymes that help to exfoliate away dead skin as well as brighten the skin! Haircare Our haircare range has been optimised with a trademarked esmi Biome blend that is tailored to your individual hair concerns.  See the table below to read about our esmi Biome blends for more information.

Vegan Skincare Benefits: A Healthier Approach to Beauty

Vegan... Skincare? What on earth does that mean?! Vegan skincare means that it is free from animal-derived ingredients and isn't tested on animals. Instead, plant-based alternatives are used. Ingredients like beeswax, lanolin and collagen are replaced with cruelty-free options. Vegan skincare is becoming more popular in this day and age as we become more aware of our ethical and environmental footprint. Many more people are striving to include vegan skincare in their beauty routine as a way of supporting ethical consumption and environmental preservation while being gentle on the skin. Benefits of using vegan skincare  Vegan skincare products offer numerous benefits, including the use of natural, plant-based ingredients that are often a lot more gentle on the skin. They avoid harsh chemicals and animal by-products, reducing the risk of irritation and allergies. Beyond clean beauty, embracing vegan skincare supports the well-being of animals by avoiding animal testing and ingredients. It also promotes environmental sustainability through eco-friendly sourcing and packaging. By choosing vegan products, you prioritise ethical consumption and the health of our planet. Incorporating vegan skincare into your routine can lead to healthier, more radiant skin while making a positive impact on the world. Planet-friendly & cruelty-free  Vegan skincare products are often made with sustainable practices, reducing the environmental footprint and ensuring that no animals are harmed in the process. Non-toxic formulations These products avoid harsh chemicals and synthetic ingredients, opting instead for natural, plant-based components that are safer for both your skin and overall health. Gentle for sensitive skin Vegan skincare is typically free from common irritants and allergens, making it a suitable choice for those with sensitive skin or skin conditions. Good for your health  By using ingredients free from pesticides, parabens, and synthetic fragrances, vegan skincare products can minimise the risk of negative health effects and promote overall wellness. Effective and better for your skin Many vegan skincare products are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which can nourish, protect, and improve the appearance of your skin more effectively than conventional products. Is your skincare vegan? To identify whether a product is vegan or non-vegan, consider the following steps: Check the Packaging: Look for labels or certifications stating "vegan" or "cruelty-free." Examine the Logo: Recognize trusted vegan logos such as the Vegan Society's sunflower logo, Leaping Bunny, or PETA's cruelty-free bunny. Identify animal-derived ingredients: While we are moving forward in the world of vegan skincare, there's still a lot for us to look out for. Learn to spot scientific names of common non-vegan ingredients: Beeswax (Cera Alba): Often found in balms and moisturisers. Lanolin (Adeps Lanae): Derived from sheep's wool, used in lotions. Collagen: Animal protein used for anti-ageing benefits. Keratin: Found in hair care products, sourced from animal hooves and horns. Carmine (Cochineal extract): Red pigment from crushed beetles, used in makeup. Common non-vegan ingredients to avoid: Glycerin (unless plant-based): Can be animal or plant-derived. Stearic Acid: Often from animal fat, though plant-based versions exist. Squalene: Traditionally sourced from shark liver oil, now also derived from plants. Empower consumers: By understanding labels and ingredient lists, consumers can confidently switch to a vegan skincare routine. Embrace products that are kind to your skin, animals, and the environment for a compassionate and healthy beauty regimen. Is esmi Skin Minerals a vegan skin care brand? esmi Skin Minerals exemplifies industry expertise in vegan and mineral-based product production, proudly leading as the best vegan skincare brand in Australia. The Low-Down on Cleansing

Cleansing your skin is the essential process of removing dirt, oil, makeup, and impurities from the surface of your skin to maintain its health and appearance. The goal is to achieve a clean, refreshed complexion that promotes overall skin health and vitality.  Why does cleansing matter so much? It seems like such a simple step, but cleansing is up there as one of the most important steps of your skincare routine (next to applying your SPF!). Ensuring you are using a gentle cleanser that doesn't strip the skin's natural oils or disrupt the barrier, allows for your skin to start off with a great base for other skincare goodies to absorb properly into the skin. Would you add ingredients to the pot if it was covered in cling wrap? NO.   The skin works hard to keep the baddies out and the goodies in, being the largest organ of our immunity system. During the day our skin is exposed to dirt, debris and other environmental pollutants that can trigger inflammation and cause oxidative stress on the surface of the skin. This can result in concerns of pigmentation, dullness, histamine reactions such as rashes/itchiness and breakouts.  Cleansing (or double cleansing, if you have the time) removes these impurities from the surface of the skin and also works to melt away residue of cosmetics, which can contain waxes and oils that can create a film on the skin.   This daily routine helps to prevent clogged pores, breakouts, and other skin issues, while also preparing your skin to better absorb other skincare products like moisturizers and serums. Should I be using gel, cream, oil, foaming or a balm cleanser? End of the day, as long as the skin is feeling happy and soft you can continue with whichever type of cleanser you are loving the feel of. However anything really sudsy or containing AHA/BHAs will slightly remove oil from the surface of the skin - so if you're a little more on the dry side we suggest staying with a more creamy formulation.  Our range of Uncomplicated Cleansers are perfect for all skin types. The gentle cream formula balances skin and won’t leave it dry or tight, just clean, calm, and supple. The formulation focuses on cleansing while supporting skin hydration and maintaining a healthy oil/moisture balance. It gently removes all traces of makeup, dirt, excess oil, and other impurities, while calming and protecting skin (win, win!). Top tips for cleansing Here are our top tips for cleansing your face to squeaky clean status.  Anything that touches your face should be clean  Wash your face using lukewarm water and your favourite cleanser - Anything warmer than lukewarm will dry you up, sis! Double cleanse when wearing makeup Don't forget your neck and décolletage Be gentle when drying your face Follow with hydration Did you know?! A typical cosmetic product will contain anything from 15–50 ingredients. Our Uncomplicated Cleanser has just twelve. It is simple and so effective! So next time you are cleansing your face, take a moment to appreciate the hard work your skin does keeping you pathogen free.  All The Uncomplicated Cleansers have the same great base of ingredients, so if your skin loves the OG, it may be worth trying to try our other cleansers that target a specific skin concern. For example: The Uncomplicated Cleanser plus Anti-Redness contains Tasmanian Mountain Pepper that helps reduce redness and puffiness associated with inflammation, also a powerful antioxidant to help strengthen and protect skin cells.

This effect is particularly handy around the eyes, where it helps diminish puffiness and dark circles by reducing blood flow. Think of it as a mini spa treatment for tired eyes, courtesy of caffeine. ☕ Improves firmness Research suggests that caffeine in skincare may stimulate collagen production, enhancing skin elasticity and firmness. This boost in collagen can help combat wrinkles and fine lines, resulting in smoother, more youthful-looking skin. So, incorporating caffeine into your skincare routine isn't just a wake-up call for your face; it's a step towards firmer, more resilient skin!   ☕ Provides antioxidant properties Caffeine in skincare isn't just a pick-me-up; it's a powerhouse of antioxidants. These antioxidants act as shields, protecting your skin from the harmful effects of UV radiation and pollution. By warding off environmental aggressors, caffeine helps maintain a youthful appearance, keeping your skin looking fresh and vibrant. It's like having a protective barrier against the elements, courtesy of your skincare routine!   ☕ Better circulation When applied topically in skincare products, caffeine has the remarkable ability to enhance blood flow. By promoting better circulation to and within the skin, it fosters a healthier complexion over time. This improved blood flow nourishes the skin, giving it a radiant, revitalised appearance. Earth Day 2024

Earth Day originated  in 1970 as a day to raise awareness for environmental protection, emphasising issues like climate change and pollution. esmi is supporting this initiative through its Carbon Neutral Plan. In this blog, readers will discover more about Earth Day 2024 and esmi's dedication to sustainability. When is Earth Day? Earth Day 2024 is on April 22nd. It is an annual event raising awareness for environmental protection since 1970. It emphasises issues like climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss. The ultimate goal of the important day in the year is to prompt global action. Through activities like tree planting and clean-up campaigns, it inspires individuals and organisations to prioritise sustainability and safeguard the planet for future generations. What is the 2024 Earth Day theme? The theme for Earth Day this year is 'Planet vs. Plastics'. Earthday.org is committed to ending plastics for the health of humans and the planet, advocating for a 60% reduction in the production of plastics by 2040.  Plastic packaging waste in the cosmetic industry  Plastic packaging waste in the cosmetic industry remains a significant environmental concern, with vast quantities of plastic entering landfills and oceans annually. According to data from Euromonitor International, the global cosmetic industry produces over 120 billion units of packaging each year, a substantial portion of which is single-use plastic. This contributes to environmental degradation, including harm to wildlife through ingestion or entanglement, exacerbation of deforestation due to the production of plastic materials, and water wastage in the manufacturing process. Additionally, micro-plastics from packaging can infiltrate ecosystems, posing threats to aquatic life and potentially entering the food chain. Addressing this issue requires efforts from companies to adopt sustainable packaging alternatives and promote environmentally-friendly initiatives. Sustainable beauty packaging by esmi Here, state that esmi is supporting the ‘Planet vs Plastics’ initiative with sustainable packaging. Peptides send signals to tell the cells what to do, certain peptides have been shown to simulate the production of collagen, enhance skin texture by increasing the cell turnover, inhibit melanin production which can reduce the signs of pigmentation and provide antioxidant protection to the skin.  This little miracle worker interrupts those expression lines like a boss, smoothing out your skin's surface and giving you that youthful glow. And if you're wondering how peptides work, think of them as the superheroes of the skincare world – they signal your cells to create new collagen and tackle all sorts of skin concerns, from ageing to hydration to pigmentation and beyond! Difference between blue and pink?! Now, you might be wondering, what's the difference between our Ageless Hyaluronic Serum and our blue Hyaluronic Hydrating Serum? Well, think of the Ageless as your everyday go-to for plumping and firming, with a side of collagen-boosting peptides. Meanwhile, the Blue is all about repairing, healing, and balancing oil levels, thanks to niacinamide and allantoin. It's like having two besties – one for the AM and one for the PM – keeping your skin happy around the clock!    If you already love our blue Hyaluronic Hydrating Serum, you can certainly continue to use this in your morning routine to hydrate and repair, then incorporate your new Ageless Serum into your night routine to stimulate skin firming and collagen production whilst you sleep!

How to Introduce Retinol into Your Skincare Routine

Introducing retinol into your skincare routine requires a thoughtful approach to ensure effectiveness while minimizing potential side effects. What is retinol? Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A known for its ability to promote skin renewal, reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and improve skin texture. It's commonly used to address signs of aging and acne. Your step-by-step guide to introducing retinol Start slowly: If you're new to retinol, begin with a low concentration to allow your skin to adjust gradually. esmi's retinol collection is ranked in levels - Level 1 being the lowest concentration of encapsulated retinol at 0.25% and Level 4 being the highest at 1.0%.   Consider the concentration: Opt for a formulation suited to your skin type. If you have sensitive skin, consider a gentle formulation or consult with a dermatologist for recommendations. Patch test: Before applying retinol to your entire face, perform a patch test on a small area of your skin, such as your forearm, to check for any adverse reactions or irritation. Apply at night: Retinol can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so  apply it at night so it can work its magic while you slumber. Take it easy: Don't go applying it every night. Start off using it once a week and build up your tolerance. Start by using it every other night or a few times a week to minimise irritation. Cleanse your skin: Begin with a gentle cleanser to remove makeup, dirt and impurities from your skin before applying retinol. Apply a pea-sized amount: A little goes a long way with retinol. Use a pea-sized amount for your entire face to avoid over-application, which can lead to irritation. Moisturise: After applying retinol, follow up with a moisturizer to help hydrate and soothe your skin. Look for a non-comedogenic formula that won't clog pores. Apply sunscreen: During the day, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin from UV damage. This is especially important when using retinol, as it can increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun. Be patient: Results from retinol may take time to appear, so be patient and consistent with your skincare routine. It can take several weeks to see improvements in skin texture and tone. Monitor for irritation: Keep an eye out for signs of irritation such as redness, dryness, flakiness or peeling. If irritation occurs, reduce the frequency of retinol application or switch to a lower concentration. Consult our skin service team: If you have concerns about incorporating retinol into your skincare routine or experience persistent irritation, chat to our our knowledgable and qualified skin consultants for personalised advice. Alternatively, you can book a skin consultation to evaluate your skin and provide you with a tailored skincare routine. By following these steps, you can safely and effectively introduce retinol into your skincare routine and reap its benefits for healthier, more youthful-looking skin.

Best Face Moisturiser for Winter

During winter, moisturiser becomes a crucial step in skincare routines due to the cold, dry air that depletes skin moisture. Cold air, dry indoor heat, lower humidity levels, and strong winds common in winter can pull a lot of moisture from the skin and cause the skin to be able to soak up a lot nourishment than in the warmer months (where oil production increases due to heat & humidity). Finding the best moisturiser for your skin in this season is super duper important as it ensures optimal nourishment and protection against harsh environmental conditions. In this blog, we will offer valuable tips on selecting the right moisturiser tailored to different skin types, considering factors like hydration levels, sensitivity and texture preferences. Choosing the appropriate moisturiser can help maintain a healthy skin barrier, keeping your complexion smooth, supple, and radiant throughout the winter! Benefits of a face moisturiser  Moisturisers offer a plethora of benefits that go beyond simple hydration. They form the cornerstone of any skincare routine, delivering nourishment, protection and rejuvenation to the skin.  Helps dryness Dry skin is not just a cosmetic concern; it can lead to discomfort, flakiness and even exacerbate skin conditions like eczema. Moisturisers with active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid work wonders in restoring the skin's moisture balance. These ingredients attract and lock in moisture, keeping the skin supple, soft and hydrated throughout the day. Creates a strong skin barrier The skin barrier acts as the body's first line of defence against environmental aggressors, pollutants and pathogens. When compromised, it can lead to issues like sensitivity, redness and accelerated ageing. Nourishing moisturisers containing ingredients like niacinamide, peptides and fatty acids help strengthen the skin barrier, enhancing its resilience and ability to ward off external stressors. By reinforcing the skin barrier, these moisturisers promote overall skin health and vitality. Brightens with active ingredients Achieving a radiant complexion is a common skincare goal for many. Active ingredients such as vitamin C, retinol and alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) found in moisturisers offer transformative benefits for dull and lacklustre skin. Vitamin C, a potent antioxidant, helps brighten the skin, fade dark spots and even out skin tone. Retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, stimulates cell turnover, reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and discolouration. AHAs gently exfoliate the skin's surface, revealing a smoother, more radiant complexion underneath. Incorporating moisturisers infused with these active and nourishing ingredients into your skincare routine can yield remarkable results, transforming your skin from lacklustre to luminous. However, it's essential to choose products that suit your skin type and address your specific concerns. Consistency and patience are key when it comes to skincare; with regular use, moisturisers can help you achieve your desired skin goals and unlock a newfound radiance that shines from within. How often should I moisturise my face in winter? Changing your moisturising step can be helpful as the cooler months arrive, even for a more oily skin type.  You are recommended to still moisturise both AM and PM. There is no need to increase the applications, however the product you use may change. Feel free to opt to use a more nourishing cream-like texture or you can even look to add an oil into the routine by layering over the top of your current moisturiser or adding a few drops to your moisturiser. All our oils are suitable to use this way! If your skin is still feeling really dry, even after using our most nourishing moisturising products, opt for the Ultra Nourishing Booster Mask as an overnight treatment. This is packed with occlusive ingredients (providing a physical barrier to lock moisture to the skin), such as Shea & Cocoa Butter, Rosehip Oil and Jojoba Oil. When the skin becomes drier, it can also feel a little more sensitive. The adjustment of more active products might need to be swapped out for more nourishing treatments like a booster mask. Sheet Mask vs Booster Mask: Which Should I Choose?

In the pursuit of radiant skin, face masks stand as unparalleled allies, offering an extra layer of nourishment and rejuvenation to elevate any skincare routine. Enter esmi, renowned for its diverse range of sheet masks and booster masks. Today, we delve into a comparison to determine which option best suits your skincare needs. The benefits of a sheet mask  Convenience: Sheet masks are incredibly easy to apply and require minimal effort compared to traditional masks. They come pre-soaked in beneficial ingredients, eliminating the need for measuring or mixing. Hydration: Sheet masks are designed to deliver intense hydration to the skin. The mask's material creates a barrier that prevents the evaporation of moisture, allowing the skin to absorb the nourishing ingredients fully. Fast results: Unlike some skincare products that require consistent use to see results, sheet masks provide instant gratification. They can instantly plump up the skin, leaving it looking refreshed and rejuvenated. Thirsty Skin Sheet Plumping Mask Let's take a look at some of the specific benefits of esmi's Thirsty Skin Sheet Plumping Mask.  The Thirsty Skin Sheet Plumping Mask by e.s.m.i. offers a unique blend of ingredients tailored to provide deep hydration and rejuvenation to the skin. Here's why it stands out: Intense hydration: The Thirsty Skin mask is formulated with hyaluronic acid, a powerhouse ingredient known for its ability to attract and retain moisture in the skin. This ensures that your skin stays hydrated and plump throughout the day. Nourishing ingredients: In addition to hyaluronic acid, the mask contains a blend of botanical extracts and vitamins that nourish and revitalize the skin, leaving it looking radiant and healthy. Suitable for all skin types: The Thirsty Skin mask is suitable for all skin types, including dry, oily, combination, and sensitive skin. Its gentle formulation makes it ideal for those with sensitive skin who may be prone to irritation from other skincare products. Easy application: Like all sheet masks, the Thirsty Skin mask is incredibly easy to apply. Simply unfold the mask and place it over your face, leaving it on for the recommended amount of time. There's no mess or hassle involved, making it perfect for busy individuals or those looking for a quick skincare pick-me-up. Immediate results: Upon application, you'll notice an immediate improvement in the texture and hydration levels of your skin. The mask works quickly to deliver visible results, making it a must-have in your skincare routine, especially before special events or occasions when you want your skin to look its best.  How often to use a sheet mask  There is no set number of times you should be using the sheet mask. We recommend using it the night before a special event, anytime you feel like an extra indulgent self care moment or once per week! There is no right or wrong time to use our sheet masks.   Can sheet masks break you out?  The misconception that sheet masks cause breakouts often arises due to concerns about comedogenic ingredients. However, esmi's Thirsty Skin Sheet Plumping Mask is formulated with non-comedogenic components, significantly reducing the risk of pore blockage. Hyaluronic Acid, a key ingredient in the mask, delivers lightweight hydration without adding excess oils, crucial for maintaining the balance of acne-prone skin. Allantoin possesses soothing, anti-inflammatory properties, effective in reducing redness and irritation. The mask also incorporates gentle exfoliating agents, like fruit extracts, to eliminate dead skin cells and unclog pores without causing irritation. Components like niacinamide and ceramides contribute to balancing the skin's pH levels and regulating oil production, helping prevent acne flare-ups.  Still unsure about a sheet mask? Try a booster mask! esmi's booster masks offer a myriad of benefits that cater to various skin types and needs, distinguishing themselves from the sheet mask. Here's an exploration of the advantages of our booster masks: Tailored to specific skin types: One of the standout benefits of booster masks is their ability to target specific skin concerns. Unlike the generic sheet mask, booster masks come in a variety of formulations tailored to address diverse skincare needs. For example, the Hyaluronic Hydrating Booster Mask is perfect for those with dehydrated skin and the Anti-Ageing Repair Gel Booster Mask is great for those concerned about ageing. Longer lasting: Booster masks offer longevity compared to the traditional sheet mask. While sheet masks typically come as single-use packets, booster masks are designed for multiple applications. Control over application: With booster masks, users have greater control over the amount and distribution of product applied to their skin. Unlike sheet masks, which come pre-soaked in serum, booster masks allow individuals to adjust the coverage according to their preference.   Shop sheet masks and booster masks with esmi As we explore the benefits of esmi's sheet masks and booster masks, it becomes evident that both offer exceptional skincare benefits. For optimal results, consider incorporating both into your routine, alternating between them weekly. Discover more about esmi's face mask collection.

Skin Care for Dry Skin

Dry skin can be a real diva, can't it? One day it's smooth, supple, and glowing. The next, it decides to throw a tantrum - leaving you with a parched and flaky complexion. The unpredictability of dry skin can be frustrating, we get it. With the right routine and products, you can tame this temperamental beast and keep your skin looking and feeling its best. In this blog, we'll explore some tried-and-true tips and tricks for treating dry skin, along with recommendations for the best skincare products to help you achieve a healthy, radiant complexion. Why is dry skin hard to treat? Dry skin is challenging to treat due to its complex underlying mechanisms and the potential for exacerbation over time without proper care. The skin barrier, composed of lipids and proteins, acts as a protective shield against external factors. When the skin lacks sufficient moisture, this barrier becomes compromised, leading to susceptibility to irritants and moisture loss. Without quality skin care, the skin's lipid barrier weakens, allowing water to evaporate more easily and leaving the skin parched. Over time, the skin's natural ability to retain moisture diminishes, exacerbating dryness and potentially leading to conditions like eczema or dermatitis. Research indicates that prolonged exposure to harsh environmental conditions, such as low humidity or excessive cleansing, can further disrupt the skin barrier, contributing to persistent dryness. Without intervention, chronic dry skin can lead to discomfort, itching, inflammation, and premature aging. Thus, effective treatment strategies should focus on replenishing moisture, reinforcing the skin barrier, and addressing underlying factors contributing to dryness. The best skin care routine for dry skin Here are some of our tips and tricks for dry skin.  Use a gentle cleanser to refresh the skin without stripping moisture in the AM and PM Follow up your cleanser with a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser to lock in hydration  Use a sunscreen to protect against UV damage  Incorporate a nourishing serum, containing ingredients like hyaluronic, into your night routine Seal in hydration with a nourishing moisturiser to soothe and repair the skin overnight In noticeably humid environments, use lighter formulations to prevent clogged pores and excess shine Choosing products for dry skin If you're battling dry skin, you're probably on the lookout for products that can offer relief and hydration. Tips to Achieve Your Hair Growth Goals

Was one of your new year's resolutions to grow your hair? We've got your back hair. A good hair care routine can significantly impact the overall health of your hair. 🚿 Use a good shampoo & conditioner  Choosing the right shampoo and conditioner tailored to your specific hair type is crucial for promoting healthy hair growth, as it addresses your unique needs. For example, this means hydration for dry hair or oil control for those with a more oily scalp. A well-matched conditioner complements the shampoo by providing essential nutrients and moisture to the hair shaft - preventing breakage and split ends. esmi's haircare range caters to those with dry hair, dull hair, oily hair or hair that needs a little more strength and hydration.  💇🏼‍♀️ Get regular trims (trust us)  While it may seem counterintuitive to cut your hair when you're aiming for length, routine trims eliminate split ends and prevent breakage, ensuring that your hair remains strong. Split ends can travel up the hair shaft, leading to further damage and hindering growth. By snipping your damaged ends away, you create a clean canvas for healthier strands to emerge - woo! Trims also contribute to maintaining the overall shape and appearance of your hairstyle. In conclusion, embrace the trim. 🪮 Take care of your scalp A nourished scalp supports strong hair follicles, reduces dandruff, and prevents hair loss. It is fundamental to your hair growth journey. We recommend using a scalp brush, as it promotes hair growth by stimulating blood circulation and exfoliating the scalp - removing dead skin cells and product buildup. It also enhances the effectiveness of your haircare products - it's a win-win. 💧 Stay on top of hydration Hydration is vital for hair growth! Moisture nourishes the scalp and hair follicles, prevents breakage and promotes a healthy hair-scape. Adequate hydration enhances elasticity, shine, and strength. If you're looking for products to boost your hair's hydration factor, our very own Hyaluronic Hydrating Hair Mask and Hyaluronic Hydrating Hair Serum are perfect for the job. The Hyaluronic Hydrating Hair Mask, enriched with hyaluronic acid, deeply hydrates and revitalises the scalp, creating the optimal environment for hair follicles to flourish. The Hyaluronic Hydrating Hair Serum complements this by delivering a potent blend of hyaluronic acid, vitamins, and botanical extracts directly to the hair and scalp, improving moisture retention and strengthening follicles.  🙅🏽‍♀️ Avoid heat where possible  Shielding your hair from excessive heat is a crucial act of love for those dreamy locks. Heat styling tools like straighteners and curling irons can cause dryness, brittleness, and split ends (eek). High temperatures strip your hair of its natural moisture, making it extra prone to breakage. Embracing natural textures and styles not only promotes healthier hair growth but also ensures that each strand is ready to flaunt its full potential. So, let your hair chill, and watch it grow into its most vibrant and resilient self! If it's frizz you're concerned about, invest in our Dry Hair Nourishing Balm to manage your hair when you've put down the heat tools. If you simply refuse to remove heat altogether, we recommend waiting to brow-dry when your hair is at least 60% dry. Use a gentle hair drying wrap, such as our Hair Wrap, while you wait.    We wish you luck on your hair growth endeavour. If you need any more advice or education on any of our products, don't hesitate to reach out to our Skin Service team here.

Can You Use Niacinamide With Retinol?

Niacinamide and retinol. Two words that will bring a smile to any skincare lover’s face, and we’re no different. They are ingredients that we just can’t get enough of, thanks to their anti-ageing and acne-fighting powers. If you’re a fan of them (join the club!), you’re probably wondering, can you use niacinamide with retinol? Well, let’s find out.  What is niacinamide and what does it do? Niacinamide in skincare, sometimes known as vitamin B3, has a pretty impressive list of talents. It is really great at calming inflammation, so if you’re experiencing redness and irritation from skin sensitivities, acne, dermatitis or other skin concerns, it’s time to make friends with niacinamide. If your sebum levels are in overdrive, niacinamide basically tells the cells to calm down, thank you very much. It helps your skin retain moisture and just in case that wasn’t enough, it inhibits melanin production to reduce hyperpigmentation. Phew, what a clever cookie! What is retinol and what does it do? Retinol is derived from vitamin A, and 9 out 10 beauty lovers will tell you it is the product they cannot live without. It speeds up skin cell turnover to lightly exfoliate and decongest the skin. That’s why it is an acne sufferer’s best friend. Plus, it helps with signs of ageing as it boosts collagen production to plump fine lines and brighten pigmentation.  Slow and steady is the key when it comes to retinol. Start with a low strength and use a pea sized amount every second night. When you first start, you may notice some redness and sensitivity, but your skin will get used to it and when you start seeing that glow, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without retinol. Can you use niacinamide and retinol together? All of our beauties with acne or hyperpigmentation (or both!), put your hands up. Yup, we thought there might be a few of you. By now you can probably tell that retinol and niacinamide are top ingredients for acne, hyperpigmentation and signs of ageing, so the million-dollar question is, “can you use niacinamide with retinol?” Well, we have some good news - you sure can!  They play very nicely together and you’ll see some beautifully brightening results when you layer them as part of your routine. Having said that, there are just a couple of rules to play by to get the most out of your skincare.  Niacinamide can be used morning and night, but we recommend saving retinol for your night-time routine as it can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. So, it stands to reason that using them together should be reserved for your wind down.  Use niacinamide first after cleansing, as it is usually in a water-based product and sits beautifully as the first step on dry skin. Speaking of, the esmi Hyaluronic Hydrating Serum is rich in niacinamide for skin repair, restoration and oil flow regulation. It is beautifully hydrating for all skin types - yes, even if you’ve got oily skin. If acne is taking up home on your skin, the Anti-Redness Minty Green Smoothie contains niacinamide to help reduce sebum levels, and calms inflammation from pimples.  The benefit of using niacinamide before retinol is it helps to protect your skin from sensitivity and dryness that can come from retinol. That means you’ll get the perks without the drawbacks. Sounds perfect to us! After your niacinamide serum, use a pearl sized amount of our Encapsulated Retinol every second night. Being encapsulated means the active ingredients can penetrate deeper into the skin and reduce the risk of any dryness that can occur with your typical retinol. Always start with Level 1 and once you finish your first bottle, if your skin is coping well, you can move up to the next level. Because retinol makes your skin more sensitive to UV light, make sure you’re using your Skin Shield Natural Sunscreen every morning to keep your skin protected.    Niacinamide and retinol are a match made in heaven, and when you use them together, you’ll get double the dose of clearer, brighter, and more youthful-looking skin - um, sign us up! Choosing the right moisturiser is crucial in any skincare routine. For those with oily skin, this choice becomes even more important. While a well-crafted skincare routine tailored to oily skin can do wonders, using the wrong moisturiser can undo all your hard work ☹️ Oily skin requires careful attention to avoid worsening the issue. Opt for a moisturiser that is non-comedogenic and oil-free. Avoid heavy, creamy formulations that can lead to excess oil production and pore clogging. In essence, your moisturiser can make or break your skincare efforts. It's the final touch that seals in the benefits of your routine, and choosing the right one ensures that your skin stays healthy and free from unwanted oiliness. Which ingredients should I be looking for in an oily skin moisturiser?  When searching for a moisturiser to implement in your routine, look for the following ingredients.  ✨ Niacinamide Niacinamide, or Vitamin B3, is a standout ingredient for oily skin. It regulates oil production, helping to maintain a balanced complexion. Additionally, it possesses anti-inflammatory properties, reducing redness and irritation common in oily skin types. As an added benefit, niacinamide aids in minimising the appearance of pores, contributing to a smoother and refined skin texture. ✨ Squalane Squalane is a lightweight, non-comedogenic oil that mimics the skin's natural sebum. It hydrates without clogging pores, providing essential moisture for oily skin. By preventing the overproduction of oil, squalane helps in achieving a matte finish, leaving the skin nourished but not greasy. ✨ Centella Asiatica Extract Centella Asiatica extract is renowned for its soothing and healing properties. Ideal for oily and acne-prone skin, it calms inflammation and supports the skin's natural regeneration process. This botanical extract aids in maintaining a healthy balance, promoting clear and revitalised skin. ✨ Lactic Acid Lactic acid, a gentle alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), is effective for oily skin due to its exfoliating properties. It helps unclog pores and removes excess oil, preventing breakouts. Simultaneously, lactic acid encourages cell turnover, promoting a brighter and more even skin tone. ✨ Red Algae Red algae is rich in antioxidants and minerals, providing essential nourishment for oily skin. It helps regulate oil production while protecting the skin from environmental stressors. It eradicates the heaviness often associated with traditional moisturisers. ✨ Butterfly Ginger Root Butterfly ginger root is a unique ingredient known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Particularly beneficial for oily skin, it helps soothe irritation and redness. This root extract contributes to a calm and balanced skin tone, complementing the overall effectiveness of a moisturiser tailored for oily skin. Ingredients to avoid in a moisturiser for oily skin  Of course, there are a few big no-no's in the skincare world that oily skin should not be faced with! Selecting a moisturiser free from the following ingredients ensures that your skincare routine supports, rather than hinders, your oily skin concerns. 🙅🏽‍♀️ Mineral Oil: Mineral oil, commonly found in moisturisers, can be overly occlusive for oily skin. It forms a barrier that may trap excess oil, potentially leading to clogged pores and increased acne. Opting for non-comedogenic oils is a preferable choice. 🙅🏽‍♀️ Petroleum: Similar to mineral oil, petroleum-based ingredients can create a heavy barrier on the skin, hindering its ability to breathe. This can result in an undesirable buildup of oil and impurities, exacerbating the challenges faced by individuals with oily skin. 🙅🏽‍♀️ Isopropyl Myristate:  It has the potential to increase the perception of oiliness on the skin and may contribute to pore congestion, leading to breakouts. 🙅🏽‍♀️ Alcohol Denat: High concentrations of alcohol denat in a moisturiser can be excessively drying, triggering the skin to produce more oil to compensate. This paradoxical effect can disrupt the delicate balance needed for oily skin, causing irritation and potential long-term damage. 🙅🏽‍♀️ Fragrance: Fragrances, while providing a pleasant scent, can be irritating to oily skin. Synthetic fragrances, in particular, may cause sensitivity and inflammation. Opting for fragrance-free or naturally scented moisturizers is advisable for those with oily and sensitive skin.
